The Rise of the Social Entrepreneur

If we wanted to build a system that would elicit solutions to complex and unforeseeable problems wherever they were needed, how might we do it?

We might try to identify leaders scattered in communities around the planet and help them address problems as they appeared. We might try to prepare these people with leadership skills, ideas and resources so they could be effective and ethical change-makers. We’d try to create a response mechanism that acts something like the body’s immune system.

No One But Ourselves

From a post by Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of the Diocese of Washington

I woke up on Wednesday pondering what it meant that after an immoral amount of money was spent in the most expensive election in our nation’s history, the power balance in the federal government remains virtually unchanged. Many things did change as the result of Tuesday’s election, of course, but not the balance of power: The president will serve another 4 years. For now, the Democrats will control the Senate while the Republicans control the House.

Vote!

Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers
and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the election of officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP 822)

This is a great way to watch election coverage. I first heard the 2008 results watching these champions of media.
thedailyshow:

The Daily Show’s “Election Night 2012: This Ends Now” and The Colbert Report Presents “Election 2012: A Nation Votes, Ohio Decides; The Re-Presidenting of America: Who Will Replace Obama? ‘012!” will both air live on Comedy Central from 11:00-11:30 p.m. ET (8:00-8:30 p.m. PT) and 11:30-midnight ET (8:30-9:00 p.m. PT) respectively, and will be simulcast on MTV’s Times Square JumboTron.
And for the first time ever, both shows will stream live on comedycentral.com, iOS and Android enabled devices, Xbox consoles and through The Daily Show Headlines App.

on on/offline conflict etiquette

Election season, like driving and going to Black Friday sales, always seems to bring out the worst in people. During these times we often find ourselves caught in a dilemma between standing up for what we believe to be moral, ethical, and true, and treating those with whom we disagree with love. It’s a tricky struggle, and with social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter, everyone has a soapbox on which to stand. Our “News Feeds” can more quickly than ever tell us what our friends, family, and acquaintances are reading and what they think about it.

Though we might try to “walk a mile in the other’s shoes,” it seems we often do it so that when we criticize them we’ll be a mile away with their shoes.

The Wrong Side Absolutely Must Not Win

No reasonably intelligent person can deny this. All you have to do is look at the way the Other Side has been running its campaign. Instead of focusing on the big issues that are important to the American People, it has fired a relentlessly negative barrage of distortions, misrepresentations, and flat-out lies.

President Obama and Governor Romney on Faith

Follow the link to download a .pdf version of an exclusive interview with Obama and Romney on faith.

The Washington National Cathedral is responsible for the interview, and it is an interesting read for sure. Here’s an excerpt:

Question: How does faith play a role in your life?

President Obama: “First and foremost, my Christian faith gives me a perspective and security that I don’t think I would have otherwise: That I am loved. That, at the end of the day, God is in control—and my main responsibility is to love God with all of my heart, soul, and mind, and to love my neighbor as myself. Now, I don’t always live up to that standard, but it is a standard I am always pursuing…”

Governor Romney: “Faith is integral to my life. I have served as a lay pastor in my church. I faithfully follow its precepts. I was taught in my home to honor God and love my neighbor. My father was committed to Martin Luther King, Jr.’s cause of equality, and I saw my parents provide compassionate care to others, in personal ways to people nearby and in leading national volunteer movements…”

Lies the parties are telling themselves - Alexander Burns and Maggie Haberman - POLITICO.com

With Election Day still more than three months away and a few weeks still to go before the conventions, there’s relatively little that operatives on either side think they can do to shift the dynamics of the race.
